jericho, the oldest known city in the world, lies 825 feet below sea level in a plain traversed by the jordan.five miles of the river and seven miles north-west of the dead sea.
there are in fact three jerichos-old jericho, tel-es-sultan near elisha's fountain, the new testament jericho near herod's winter palace and modern jericho.
